Rationale

In today's increasingly large, nebulous Web, it has become difficult to find pages of a particular interest in one place. Search engines such as AltaVista and Yahoo are only a partial answer. Often they produce a lot of irrelevant URLs which one must sift through. As well, a good portion of these URLs often return the infamous "Error 404".

Purpose

For all its good intentions, webring.org is running into the problem of limited bandwidth, system resources, and network latency as demands for its services grow. Since its databases and scripts are centrally located, if its servers go down, the Rings break.
Clearly a different implementation was needed. Luckily, the JihadWeb[tm] Team has skilled programmers, artists, and writers at its disposal.
Writing a home-brew Ring seemed the best possible solution. Furthermore, the reliability of our hosts (Sandwich.Net Internet Services, and OneNet Communications before that) seemed to suggest that they would be an excellent place to host the CGI and database files.

Membership Criteria

The requirements for inclusion in the JihadRing[tm] are these:
  • On-Topic: It must be anti-B'harnii/Barney.
  • Content Rich: The page(s) must have substance and things to interest viewers.
  • Etiquette: Pages must comply with the Jihad's etiquette as stated in the FAQ.
  • Design: Pages must not be butt-ugly. We want people to come back.
Anyone can apply to be a member of the JihadRing[tm] -- Jihad membership does not matter. However, applicants should be knowledgable enough to understand why sites relating B'harnii to real-life tragedies, politics, etc. will be rejected out-of-hand.
Applications will be reviewed by the JihadWeb[tm] Team and are usually answered within a week. The Ring's owner reserves the final decision on inclusion in all cases.
Individual users often write links pages in an attempt to give their viewers good pointers to more related pages. However, these were also plagued by the 404 Beast if not given constant maintainence.
A Web Ring, as envisioned by http://www.webring.org/, uses a centrally located CGI script and database to link Web pages together in a continuous circle or ring. Rings are advantageous in that they are centrally maintained, can easily remove dead pages from the Ring, and (when properly maintained) guarantee a user no 404 errors.
Such an implementation seems advantageous for the Jihad to Destroy Barney as we have historically had a very disorganized Web presence and our own little plagues of 404 errors. As well, spreading anti-Barney sentiments would be more easily accomplished with a large collection of accessible pages.

Ring Rules

The following rules descibe the standard operating procedures and rules for member sites.

1) All sites must include the FULL code provided them by the Ring owner for their page. Failure to include this code means that a visitor to their site will not be able to proceed further in the Ring. The code should be placed clearly and visibly on the page in such a manner that a visitor can easily move to the next site.
2) Names for pages must remain constant to prevent membership spoofing/impersonation. For example, if a page is included as http://www.foo.com/~bar/dir/index.html, changing the page's URL to http://www.foo.com/~bar/mypage.html will cause the Ring to deny all patronage from this site.
3) Members must notify the Ring owner at least three days PRIOR to changing their URLs so adequate time exists to modify the software's configuration.
4) Member pages cannot contain commercial content, promotion of personal interests/pages, or other off-topic materials.

In all cases, the penalty for breaking these rules is termination from the Ring.

In the case of code misinclusion, server outage, and other things which make a page inaccessible, three days will be given in all cases for the problem to be corrected before final action is taken. The owner reserves the right of temporary removal from the Ring, depending on the nature of the problem.
404ed pages are automatically dropped from the Ring. Page owners will be contacted and asked for a resolution.
Off-topic, commercial, personal promotion/interest, and all similar pages are subject to immediate deletion and PERMANENT banning from the JihadRing[tm].
